We beg to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the
6th instant with which you passed to us a copy of correspondence
and photographs on the subject of damage caused to a
submarine telephone cable in the Hong Kong Harbour by the
U.S.S. "Jason" on the 4th March 1926.
2. The papers shew the history of the accident to be
as follows:-

"The "Jason" entered the Harbour on a flood tide and in order to approach the assigned mooring buoy an anchor was let go to assist the ship in swinging. When the anchor was heaved up after swinging it was found that a cable had been hooked. The ship was then held in position while the cable was "stoppered", the anchor walked back and the cable eased down".
On the cable being examined it was found that a
length of about 140 yards was so damaged that it had to be cut out, and as there was not sufficient cable on hand
in one length for the purpose two lengths had to be used and this necessitated introducing three joints into the
cable.
